The Beach

Design with/in community

Onderdeel van: About us

The Beach' objective is to develop know-how on co-designing the living environment in a socially sustainable way. Learning from addressing societal issues in co-design with local stakeholders, thus developing their daily practice in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Through such practice Sustainist Design, concerned with connectivity, local values, and community as drivers of social innovation, can be applied and shared.

The Beach was founded in 2007 and has been working since 2009 from the social incubator Garage Notweg in De Wildemanbuurt in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The main activities of The Beach comes together in programmes like 'Wijkecologie Wildeman' - a local design research into a socially sustainable neighborhood in the Wildemanbuurt area in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, 'Tuinstadslab' - connecting city & country, nature & culture, 'Gangmakers' - children learn to design and create – and Makers Unite – connecting newcomers to a new context (Makers Unite evolves as an independent social entreprise from October 2017). Lessons from daily practices are translated into tools and methodologies (sustainist design toolkit) so that they can be shared with others.
